New Family-Run Deli Opens in Ripon

New Family-Run Deli Opens in Ripon as Experienced Chef Brings Fresh Flavours to the City

A new independent deli has opened in the heart of Ripon, bringing fresh, wholesome food, locally sourced ingredients and the expertise of a chef who has worked alongside Michelin-starred talent.

Sprout & Crumb has opened at 85 North Street, adding an exciting new choice to Ripon’s growing independent food and drink scene.

The family-run business is the latest venture from experienced chef Luke Mills, who has worked in prestigious restaurants in Britain and Australia.

Specialising in freshly prepared, nutritious takeaway food, the deli offers a changing selection of dishes, with an emphasis on quality ingredients, healthy eating and supporting local suppliers.

Michelin-Starred Experience Comes to Ripon

Luke brings years of culinary knowledge to his new venture, having worked alongside acclaimed chefs including Herbert Berger at Lombard Street in London and Tessa Bramley at the Old Vicarage in Sheffield.

His career also includes seven years as a menu development chef at Filmore & Union and two years at the Light Brigade Restaurant in Woollahra, New South Wales, Australia.

Now he is bringing that experience to Ripon, with a more relaxed approach to everyday dining.

Rather than relying on a fixed menu, Luke wants customers to help shape what Sprout & Crumb offers.

“For me, the most important ingredients are the customers, because their feedback helps me to create customised dishes which add to an ever-evolving choice, rather than just offering a set menu.

“I’m open to suggestions and if I get asked to introduce a new dish to meet a particular taste, I will give it a go.”

Fresh Food and Local Yorkshire Suppliers

Supporting other independent businesses is central to the Sprout & Crumb philosophy.

The deli offers wholesome takeaway lunches, including fresh salads and other nutritious options, alongside artisan coffee and sweet treats.

Among its suppliers are The Wright Cake Bakery in Northallerton, run by Leah Wright, and Lonton coffee, roasted in Teesdale.

The emphasis is on bringing together fresh flavours, carefully selected ingredients and convenient food for people working, shopping or exploring Ripon city centre.

A Family Business with Strong Yorkshire Roots

Luke runs Sprout & Crumb with the support of his wife Lucy, who is also behind Sprouted Kitchen in Bedale and L Bar coffee shop at Leeming Bar.

The couple, who have two sons, Drew and Jax, are building on their experience in the region’s independent hospitality sector.

Luke says the welcome they have received in Ripon has been particularly encouraging.

“We have been welcomed with open arms by local residents, visitors and other independent business owners and it is clear that there is a real community feel here and a buzz on the streets.”

Ripon Businesses Welcome New Arrival

The opening has also been warmly received by neighbouring businesses.

Sarita McDermott, owner of Realitea Indian tearoom and bistro next door, welcomed the addition to North Street.

“We’re delighted to welcome this lovely new addition to our local community — a lunchtime deli serving up fresh, healthy salads and tasty options to brighten up your lunch break.”

She also encouraged residents and visitors to continue supporting the city’s independent traders.

“We encourage everyone to keep supporting all our wonderful independent businesses. Help Ripon be vibrant, and our high street to thrive.”

Ripon BID manager Lilla Bathurst welcomed the investment in the city centre.

“Luke brings a wealth of experience to Ripon and the skills he has learnt in award-winning kitchens adds to the choice that the city’s food and drink sector offers visitors and local residents alike.”
