From 18 Tractors to a Major Christmas Charity Event
Behind the festive lights and colourful decorations is a moving story of friendship, family and determination.
The Ripon Tinsel Tractor Run began in November 2023 when organisers Brian Chandler and Simon Dickinson discovered they each had a brother-in-law battling bladder cancer.
Determined to do something positive, they decided to organise a charity tractor run.
With just three weeks to prepare, they brought together 18 tractors and raised an impressive £1,640.
What started as a small gesture of support soon became something much bigger.
2024 – The Tractor Run Grows
The following year, the organising team expanded.
Colin Houseman joined to help with social media, while Mark Nicholson supported the event through NVTEC, assisting with insurance and marshalling.
The event attracted 35 tractors and raised £2,653 for charity.
2025 – A Record-Breaking Year
By 2025, the event had become so popular that demand exceeded the 38-tractor capacity of Ripon Market Place.
Determined to keep the fundraising growing, organisers approached local businesses for sponsorship.
The response was outstanding.
With generous community support, the event exceeded its fundraising target and raised an incredible £7,022.99.
Across its first three years, the tractor run raised more than £11,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Now, the team hopes to make 2026 its most successful year yet.
£10,000 Target – Can Ripon Do It Again?
This Christmas, the organisers are calling on local businesses, organisations and residents to help achieve their biggest fundraising target.
The aim is to raise £10,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, supporting vital work to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Businesses across Ripon, Boroughbridge, Harrogate, Knaresborough and the wider North Yorkshire area are being encouraged to get involved.
Sponsorship can help support the event while demonstrating a commitment to a cause that affects families throughout Yorkshire.
Whether through financial contributions, promotional partnerships or other support, every contribution could help make a difference.

Why Yorkshire Cancer Research Matters
The Ripon Tinsel Tractor Run is about much more than festive entertainment.
It raises awareness and funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research, a charity dedicated to improving cancer outcomes across the region.
Yorkshire faces significant challenges when it comes to cancer, with some communities experiencing higher diagnosis rates and poorer survival outcomes than other parts of England.
Yorkshire Cancer Research funds research into cancer prevention, earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments, helping more people live longer, healthier lives.
Every donation, sponsorship contribution and fundraising effort supports that mission.

A Christmas Tradition That Brings Communities Together
What makes the Ripon Tinsel Tractor Run so special is the community spirit behind it.
Farmers, tractor owners, volunteers, businesses and spectators all play a part in creating an event that has grown considerably since its modest beginnings in 2023.
For the organisers, the motivation remains deeply personal.
What began as a response to cancer affecting two families has become a festive tradition that brings people together and raises thousands of pounds for an important cause.
