Knaresborough Husband Jailed After Brutal Home Attack

He Told Police “There’s No Excuse” — Knaresborough Husband Jailed After Brutal Home Attack

A 54-year-old man who struck his estranged wife twice on the head with a heavy metal boot jack has been jailed for 30 months.

James Blundell admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the violent assault at the couple’s home on November 24, 2024. He was sentenced at York Crown Court.

Moments after the attack, Blundell called 999 and told emergency services:
“It’s my wife… I’ve hurt her, it’s my fault… we need the police and we need an ambulance now.”

When officers arrived, he said:
“There is no excuse for what I have done… I’ve injured someone, potentially fatally, I have been with for 28 years.”

Argument Turned Violent

The court heard the couple’s marriage had been struggling for some time. During an argument, the woman phoned a family member for advice and was encouraged to tell Blundell he would not receive money to move out unless he calmed down.

When she passed on that message, he picked up the boot jack and struck her twice on the head.

Although she avoided a catastrophic head injury, her knee was so badly damaged that she can no longer run or swim.

“I Thought I Was Going to Die”

In a personal statement, she described years of anger and violent outbursts — but said this incident was the worst.

“I had got used to my husband’s rages and violent episodes over the years, but this was the worst it had ever been,” she said.

“I thought I was going to die. It was the first time I had felt that way. I felt powerless.”

She said she had previously been afraid to reach out for help but now sees herself as “a survivor, not a victim”, and hopes to support others experiencing abuse.

Judge: Injuries Could Have Been Catastrophic

Sentencing, Judge Simon Hickey said:
“This was an attack by a heavy weapon on a woman in her own home. The injuries could have been catastrophic.”

The court heard Blundell had no previous convictions. The judge said his immediate admission of responsibility and early guilty plea showed genuine remorse.

Formerly of Knaresborough, he now lives in Southport and runs a website business servicing hundreds of companies.
