Harrogate man takes on Ironman 70.3 Vietnam to raise funds for mental health charity
A 22-year-old from Harrogate is preparing to compete in the Ironman 70.3 Vietnam in Da Nang on 10 May 2026, taking on the globally recognised Half Ironman challenge to raise money for a mental health charity.
Freddie Yates will tackle the full 70.3-mile course, one of the most demanding endurance races in the world. The event includes a 1.9km open-water swim, a 90km cycle, and a 21.1km half marathon run, all completed consecutively. With the race taking place during Vietnam’s dry season, high temperatures and humidity are expected to significantly increase the difficulty.
After finishing university, Freddie has spent the last six months travelling across South East Asia while training for the event. His preparation has included running through towns and cities, swimming in open water, and using local gym facilities where available. He has also sourced essential race equipment locally in Vietnam.
Freddie is using the Ironman 70.3 challenge to raise awareness and funds for a mental health charity founded by his former Newcastle University rugby coach, Andrew Kennedy. The organisation provides vital support for young people experiencing mental health difficulties.
The Harrogate athlete’s journey highlights the growing link between endurance sport and mental health awareness, combining personal challenge with a meaningful cause.
