Motorists Face Weeks of Misery

Motorists Face Weeks of A1(M) Misery as Major Yorkshire Motorway Closure Begins

Thousands of drivers are being warned to brace for weeks of disruption after National Highways announced a major overnight closure on one of Yorkshire’s busiest motorways.

The A1(M) southbound between Boroughbridge and Wetherby is set to close overnight for almost a month, causing potential delays for commuters, holidaymakers and freight traffic travelling through North Yorkshire.

The closure forms part of a major resurfacing project and comes as other roadworks continue along the A1(M), adding to growing concerns about travel disruption across the region.

Which Part of the A1(M) Is Closing?

The affected stretch runs between:

๐Ÿ“ Junction 48 (Boroughbridge)
๐Ÿ“ Junction 46 (Wetherby)

The motorway will be fully closed southbound from 8pm until 6am.

When Do the Closures Start?

The first full closures begin on:

  • June 5
  • June 6
  • June 7

After that, the route will close every weekday night from June 8 until early July, with daytime lane restrictions also expected.

For thousands of motorists, that could mean diversions, longer journey times and late-night traffic headaches for weeks.

Drivers Told to Plan Ahead

National Highways has warned that delays are expected throughout the project.

A spokesperson said:

“Delays are expected. Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.”

The closure comes alongside ongoing A1(M) works between Ripon and Catterick, meaning drivers could encounter disruption on multiple sections of the motorway network this summer.

Why This Matters

The A1(M) is one of the most heavily used routes in Yorkshire, carrying commuters, business traffic and visitors travelling between North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and beyond.

With the summer getaway season approaching, the timing of the works is likely to affect thousands of journeys.
