Applications to become a Special Constable are open until 11.59pm on Sunday 30 August 2026 – and you don’t need any previous policing experience.

Ever wondered what it would be like to put on a police uniform, patrol your local streets and help people when they need it most?

People across Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and the wider North Yorkshire area are being invited to find out, as North Yorkshire Police launches a recruitment drive for volunteer police officers.

This isn’t ordinary volunteering

Special Constables are warranted police officers who volunteer alongside regular officers.

That means you could be:

• Patrolling your local community
• Responding to incidents
• Helping vulnerable people
• Supporting community and major events
• Preventing and tackling crime
• Working alongside frontline police teams

Special Constables wear the same uniform and have the same policing powers as regular officers, with the exception of Taser deployment.

For anyone looking for a challenge that’s very different from everyday life, it’s an unusual opportunity to get directly involved in policing North Yorkshire.

Could you see yourself doing it?

You don’t need to come from a police, military or security background.

North Yorkshire Police is looking for people from all walks of life who can bring different experiences and perspectives to the role.

You could be suited to becoming a Special Constable if you’re a good communicator, enjoy working with others, can remain calm when things get difficult and want to make a difference where you live.

The force said:

What could your first shift look like?

That’s difficult to predict – and that’s part of the attraction.

One shift might involve reassuring residents or policing a busy community event.

Another could involve responding to an emergency, assisting regular officers or helping someone experiencing one of the most difficult days of their life.

No two shifts are guaranteed to be the same.

Can you fit it around everyday life?

Special Constables are volunteers, but there is a minimum commitment.

You’ll need to give at least 16 hours each month, with additional hours required during initial training and probation.

That potentially makes the role accessible to people who want to contribute to their community while continuing with their existing career or other commitments.

You don’t need to know how to police – they’ll teach you

Successful applicants will join one of North Yorkshire Police’s 2027 training intakes.

Training includes evening and weekend sessions, a mixture of online and face-to-face learning and a dedicated week of officer safety training.

Learning and development continues after the initial training period.

More than putting on a uniform

Becoming a Special Constable can also be an opportunity to develop skills useful in everyday life and employment.

You’ll gain experience in areas including:

Communication • Leadership • Teamwork • Decision-making • Confidence • Problem-solving • Working under pressure

For anyone considering a future career in policing, it can also provide first-hand experience of what frontline police work is really like.

What happens after you apply?

Applicants complete the National Sift, including a Situational Judgement Test and Behavioural Styles Questionnaire.

Successful candidates will then be invited to an interview with North Yorkshire Police, expected to take place in mid-to-late October.

There are also pre-employment checks, which can include vetting, references, DBS checks, a medical assessment and a fitness test.

Some occupations can conflict with the powers and responsibilities of a Special Constable, so it’s worth checking the eligibility guidance before applying.
