Grove House Harrogate: £20m Care Village to Create 200 Jobs
Grove House, a historic Harrogate landmark, is undergoing a major transformation. The plan will convert the original 1745 building into a care home featuring 24 spacious flats. A new 62-bed care home and eight supported living houses will also be built on the property’s six-acre grounds, providing modern care for residents over 65.
Springfield Healthcare purchased the site in 2017, recently receiving approval from the North Yorkshire Council to proceed with the project. CEO Graeme Lee said the goal is to create a community where residents can thrive in “safe and inspiring surroundings.”
The vision is to create a unique community concept which brings older and younger generations together. Grove House is in very close proximity to Grove Road Primary School, where schoolchildren will be invited to visit and take part in regular intergenerational activities with residents.
Work has started on a £20million care village at Grove House in Harrogate, which is expected to create around 200 jobs.
Springfield Healthcare is transforming the historic Skipton Road site into a community featuring a 76-bed care home, eight townhouses and care suites within Grove House itself.
The purpose-built care home will provide accommodation and support for older people, while the two-bedroom townhouses will offer independent living, with private gardens and dedicated parking.
The homes have been designed to be energy efficient, helping to keep running costs low.
marks a hugely significant moment for Springfield Healthcare and for Harrogate.
“This is a project that reflects our long-term vision for care.
“We are committed to creating outstanding places where older people can live well, feel part of their community and receive the right support as their needs change.”
He added that the development would give the historic property a meaningful future while respecting its heritage.
Grove House – A Landmark Steeped in Harrogate History
Grove House has been part of Harrogate’s history for more than 280 years.
Built in 1745, the property was once home to Samson Fox, the Victorian inventor, industrialist, philanthropist and former Mayor of Harrogate who played an important role in the town’s development.
During the First World War, Grove House served as a hospital, providing care during a period of national hardship.
It later became the headquarters of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, adding another chapter to the building’s varied history.
Springfield Healthcare’s plans will see the historic house carefully restored and converted into luxury care suites, preserving its character while adapting the property for modern use.
The wider estate will combine new residential facilities with landscaped surroundings, creating a setting designed to support residents’ wellbeing and independence.
Modern Care Facilities and Independent Living
At the heart of the development will be a new 76-bed residential care home offering modern accommodation and specialist support.
Alongside the care home, eight two-bedroom townhouses will provide an independent living option for older residents who want to maintain their own homes while benefiting from nearby care facilities.
The townhouses will include:
- Energy-efficient designs to help reduce household running costs.
- Private gardens providing personal outdoor space.
- Dedicated parking for residents.
- Access to additional care and support services when required.
- Opportunities to remain connected to the wider Grove House community.
The development is designed to allow residents to access different levels of care without having to leave familiar surroundings as their circumstances change.
A New Chapter for Grove House
Paul Philips, chief executive of Springfield Healthcare, said the project was about more than creating new care accommodation.
“We want Grove House to be somewhere people are proud to live, families feel confident in the care their loved ones receive, and the wider community can feel connected to.
“This is also a major investment in Harrogate, creating around 200 jobs and bringing new opportunities for people who want to build a career in care, hospitality and the wider care sector.
“We are excited to see the vision begin to take shape.”
Springfield Healthcare has been supporting communities across Yorkshire for almost 60 years, and the Grove House development represents another major addition to its care provision.
Preserving Harrogate’s Heritage for Future Generations
The transformation of Grove House will combine the preservation of an important historic building with new accommodation and employment opportunities.
By restoring the original house and developing modern care facilities within its grounds, Springfield Healthcare aims to secure a long-term future for the landmark while meeting the changing needs of older people in Harrogate and the surrounding district.
With construction now underway, the £20 million project marks the beginning of a new chapter for one of Harrogate’s historic properties.
