Drunken Wheelie Stunt

A drunken motorcyclist who tried to perform a wheelie on one of Harrogate’s busiest roads has been jailed after crashing into two women, leaving them with life-changing injuries.

Lawrence Hayward, 20, of Spa Lane, was sentenced at York Crown Court on Monday (28 July) after admitting to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink driving, and criminal damage. He was also sentenced for an unrelated robbery, bringing his total prison sentence to four years and seven months.

Dangerous ride through Harrogate

Witnesses told the court they saw Hayward riding an uninsured motorcycle through Harrogate without a helmet, weaving through traffic, riding on pavements, and repeatedly attempting wheelies.

His final stunt on Knaresborough Road ended in disaster when he lost control, mounted the pavement, and crashed into two pedestrians.

Despite trying to flee, members of the public stopped him before police arrived.

Two innocent women seriously hurt

The two women suffered devastating injuries, including broken limbs and severe facial injuries.

Police say they continue to live with the physical, emotional, and financial consequences of the collision.

Police: “A lesson to others.”

Traffic Constable Mike Halstead said, “Hayward’s arrogant and appalling attitude to road safety has resulted in life-changing injuries being caused to two completely innocent members of the public.” His riding that day was shocking, and today’s court outcome must be a lesson to others who think it’s fun to put other people in danger. No sentence can compensate for the harm Hayward has caused, but I hope today’s result provides some closure for the victims in this case.”

He also praised the members of the public who intervened, prevented Hayward from escaping and helped the injured women before emergency services arrived.

Separate robbery sentence

Hayward was also sentenced for robbing a taxi driver in June 2025.

The prison terms will run consecutively, meaning he will serve four years and seven months behind bars.

He has also been banned from driving for 52 months and must pass an extended driving test before he can legally obtain a driving licence again.
