Hundreds rally to save Knaresborough Castle

Hundreds rally to save Knaresborough Castle as fears grow over its future

If you’ve ever stood beneath the towering ruins of Knaresborough Castle, watched the sunset over the River Nidd or admired the town’s famous viaduct views, you’ll understand why so many people are determined to protect this historic landmark.

Now, more than 500 people have signed a petition calling for urgent action to restore and preserve Knaresborough Castle amid growing concerns about its condition.

The campaign is set to be debated by North Yorkshire Council next week, with supporters warning that continued deterioration could threaten one of North Yorkshire’s most loved heritage attractions.

Why people are concerned

Campaigners say visitors can already see signs of decline around the castle, including:

  • Vegetation growing through historic stonework
  • Areas of masonry showing signs of deterioration
  • Pathways and steps needing repair
  • Overgrown sections obscuring some of the castle’s famous views
  • Concerns about long-term maintenance funding

Supporters fear that without sustained investment, the condition of the castle could continue to worsen.

A landmark at the heart of Knaresborough

For many residents, Knaresborough Castle is far more than a historic ruin.

It’s where families picnic on sunny afternoons.

It’s the backdrop to countless photographs overlooking the River Nidd.

It’s one of the first places visitors head to when exploring Knaresborough.

And it’s a landmark that has defined the town’s skyline for centuries.

That emotional connection is helping to drive support for the petition.

What the petition is asking for

Campaigners want North Yorkshire Council to prioritise restoration and conservation work at the site.

Among the proposals is a call for income generated from the castle estate, including car parking revenue, to be ringfenced and reinvested directly into maintaining and improving the castle.

Supporters believe this would help safeguard the landmark for future generations.

What work is already planned?

There is some positive news.

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that specialist contractors will carry out vegetation removal work on the castle keep and perimeter walls this summer following consultation with Historic England and ecological experts.

Other planned projects include:

✔ Vegetation clearance from historic walls

✔ Repairs to deteriorating handrails around the keep

✔ A full condition assessment of the castle

✔ A long-term conservation and maintenance plan

These works are expected to take place between June and August.
