BABY SWIM SCHOOL

New Baby Swim School Launches in Harrogate to Help Little Ones Build Water Confidence for Life

For many parents, introducing their child to water can feel daunting. But a new swim school launching in Harrogate aims to make those first splashes fun, safe and memorable.

Baby Squids North Yorkshire is opening at Ashville Sports Centre on Saturday, June 6, offering specialist swimming lessons for babies, toddlers and pre-school children from birth to four years old.

Led by experienced swim teacher and former lifesaving captain Alex Mazier, the programme is designed to help children develop a positive relationship with water from the very beginning, while creating valuable bonding time for families.

Why Start Swimming So Young?

The early years are often when children develop lifelong attitudes towards water.

Alex has spent years teaching older children and adults, many of whom struggled with confidence in the pool. He believes introducing children to water early can make a huge difference.

“I saw firsthand how fear of water can develop when intervention comes too late. By starting at the very beginning, we can help children build confidence, enjoyment and essential life skills before fear has a chance to take hold.”

It’s a mission that is personal for Alex.

Despite spending his career in swimming, he remembers being an anxious child in the pool himself.

“I didn’t start lessons until I was five and I was much slower to develop than friends who had been in the water from a much younger age. I want to create a calm, supportive environment where parents and children can learn together and enjoy every step of the journey.”

What Makes Baby Squids Different?

Rather than focusing solely on swimming techniques, Baby Squids uses a child-led approach that prioritises confidence, enjoyment and trust.

Each lesson includes:

✅ Play-based learning

✅ Nursery rhymes and songs

✅ Parent participation in the water

✅ Small class sizes

✅ Structured skill development

✅ Fully qualified teachers in the pool

The aim is simple: help children feel safe, relaxed and excited about being in the water.

A Warm and Welcoming Environment

Classes take place in a pool heated to a comfortable 31°C, helping babies and young children stay relaxed throughout each session.

With instructors in the water alongside families, lessons are designed to be calm, engaging and free from distractions.

Parents can expect plenty of smiles, splashes and opportunities to celebrate every milestone, no matter how small.
