Great Knaresborough Bed Race

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race

Thousands Set to Descend on Knaresborough for Yorkshire’s Most Bizarre Race as Iconic Event Turns 60

A bed, a gruelling race through town, and a plunge into a river might sound like a strange combination – but it’s exactly why thousands of people are expected to flock to Knaresborough this summer.

One of Yorkshire’s most famous and unusual traditions is returning bigger than ever as the Great Knaresborough Bed Race celebrates its landmark 60th anniversary on Saturday, 13 June 2026.

The much-loved event, which has become a highlight of the North Yorkshire calendar, sees teams push decorated beds on a demanding 2.4-mile course through the streets of Knaresborough before launching into the River Nidd in a dramatic race to the finish.

And this year promises to be one of the biggest and most colourful yet.

Why Everyone Is Talking About Knaresborough Bed Race 2026

For six decades, the Bed Race has drawn huge crowds, transformed the town centre and created unforgettable scenes that simply can’t be found anywhere else in the UK.

Part sporting challenge, part carnival and part community celebration, the event combines outrageous costumes, spectacular bed designs and fierce competition in a day that has become legendary across Yorkshire.

Now, to mark its 60th anniversary, organisers have announced a special “Swinging Sixties” theme that is expected to produce some of the most eye-catching and creative entries the race has ever seen.

Teams are being encouraged to embrace the decade’s music, fashion and culture, with organisers promising a colourful celebration of everything that has made the Bed Race such an enduring success.

The Incredible Story Behind Yorkshire’s Most Unique Event

First held in 1966 and organised by the Knaresborough Lions Club, the Great Knaresborough Bed Race has grown from a local fundraiser into one of Britain’s most distinctive events.

Every year, thousands line the streets to watch competitors tackle steep hills, tight corners and the famous river crossing that often decides the winners.

The race has become so popular that gaining a place is highly sought after, with teams travelling from across the country to take part.

Sponsor Backs Community Spirit

Yorkshire-based Allica Bank is supporting the event through its national Here Is Where the Heart Is campaign, which celebrates the traditions and communities that help towns thrive.

Andy Castle, Relationship Manager at Allica Bank, said:As someone local to the area, the Great Knaresborough Bed Race is one of those events that people genuinely look forward to all year. It’s a fantastic showcase of community spirit, creativity and local pride.”

Thousands Expected for Landmark Celebration

With its mix of history, spectacle and outright fun, organisers are expecting another huge turnout for what could be the most memorable Bed Race in recent years.

From elaborate themed beds and fancy dress costumes to the dramatic dash through the River Nidd, visitors can expect a day unlike anything else on the Yorkshire events calendar.

Charlotte McEvoy, organiser of the Great Knaresborough Bed Race, said:We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Allica Bank as a sponsor for the 2026 event, particularly as we celebrate 60 years of the Bed Race.”

As Knaresborough prepares to celebrate six decades of one of Britain’s most extraordinary traditions, all eyes will once again be on the town for a day of colour, chaos and community spirit.
