The Great Knaresborough Bed Race

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race Celebrates 60 Spectacular Years

Thousands lined the streets of Knaresborough on Saturday as the town celebrated the 60th anniversary of its world-famous Bed Race.

Part parade, part endurance challenge and completely unique, the event once again proved why it remains one of Yorkshire’s most loved traditions.

Visitors Travelled from Germany to Take Part

Among the competitors were friends from Bebra, Knaresborough’s twin town in Germany, who returned for a second year after falling in love with the event.

“We like adventures,” said participant Lisa Krapf.

After experiencing the race for the first time last year, she was determined to come back.

“The feeling was fantastic. Everyone cheers you on and motivates you. It’s such a special atmosphere.”

A Bed Race Like No Other

The challenge is simple—but far from easy.

Teams push decorated beds around a demanding 2.4-mile course through the town before tackling the famous swim across the River Nidd and racing to the finish.

Organisers, the Knaresborough Lions Club, describe it as:

“Part fancy dress pageant and part gruelling time trial.”

Swinging Sixties Take Centre Stage

This year’s theme celebrated the event’s 60th birthday with a colourful tribute to the Swinging Sixties.

Visitors were treated to an array of imaginative creations, including a striking Yellow Submarine bed inspired by the Beatles classic. The team spent six weeks bringing the design to life.

Every bed represented a local business, charity, sports club or community organisation, highlighting the incredible creativity and community spirit that makes the event so special.

A Town Transformed

Knaresborough Lions Club secretary Martin Brock described the day as one of the town’s biggest celebrations.

  • Around 30,000 spectators attended
  • The town’s population effectively doubled for the day
  • Teams, volunteers and supporters came together from across the region
  • Visitors travelled from across the UK and overseas

“It’s a brilliant community day for Knaresborough,” he said.

Why People Keep Coming Back

The Bed Race isn’t just a race—it’s a festival atmosphere, a community celebration and a uniquely Yorkshire experience.

Whether you’re cheering from the riverside, watching the spectacular river crossing, or supporting a local team, it’s easy to see why this quirky tradition continues to attract visitors from around the world.
